We have moved into a house that was built in the '50s. We needed to install a dog gate in the back door so our dogs can get in and out of the house when we are not at home. Nothing in the house conforms to the standards that the houses being built today conform to, such as the countertops are much shorter and the fireplace would not have a password, but the small doors were our biggest problem recently. The door that was there is already filled with glass panes, so we couldn't put in a dog door. We had to replace it. The size of the door that was there was 31.5 inches wide by 72 inches high. Obviously, it was custom-made.
We went to all the second-hand stores in the area and Habitat for Humanity Restore and went through hundreds of used and odd-sized doors, but couldn't find anything. Finally, we decided to buy a blank, which is just a piece of wood the size and shape of a door and we tried to cut both sides to fit. Exterior blanks are generally 36 inches wide by 80 inches tall.
After a carpenter friend of ours said that "there is always something wrong with doors," we decided to call in a professional. He came in and told us that he would get a blank, cut it to fit, and install the dog gate, as well as put weatherstripping and a footrest. So there was a lot more to the story than we had originally thought.
He also decided the size of the door, that is, how deep it was. He had to fit our dog gate and he was going to use 1 and 3/8-inch because they are generally less expensive, but he ended up choosing 1 and 3/4-inch because it was the same price and a better door for exterior use.
