Most of the doors and door units for remodeling or new home construction projects come from a local door company. Standard sizes are ordered or carried in stock. Custom door sizes are always requested.

In some cases, you can literally walk out of the store with the door of your choice. These are called "stock" because they are kept, well, in stock (on-site). Most door companies have some type of warehouse attached to their showroom. But, as you can imagine, those warehouses aren't big enough to hold all the selections and sizes. However, sometimes you may need to lift a door right away. I have done it too. I once quickly decided that I wanted more light in a wall during my own home remodeling project. In terms of style, you can find what you want in stock. Those styles are typically recessed, louvered, or paneled doors (in limited paneled configurations). Stock sizes available will vary by market and door company.

In our market, the stock door sizes are:

• Through doors: 1-6, 2-0, 2-4, 2-6, 2-8 and 3-0.

• Folding doors: 4-0, 5-0, and 6-0.

Other options, such as sliding doors, unusual panel configurations, decorative glass, diversion doors, double doors, and more, will generally only be available upon request.
