Measure your door correctly

If you have a door that you want to replace, measure the existing door from top to bottom and round the measurement to the next inch. Now measure it from left to right and round the measurement up again. Next, measure the thickness of the door. Most doors are built to a standard 1 ¾-inch thickness, so it probably shouldn't be too far from that. Make a special note if it is. To be sure, also measure the width of the door jamb and the height and width of the frame, not including the trim. This way you have everything you need to find a suitable match wherever you go looking.

Preliminary measures

Once you've measured your wood exterior doors, add two inches to each measurement. That's what people in the industry call a 'rough measurement', and they use it to allow for the space you'll need for things like shim material and hinges. So, for example, if your door is going to be 32 by 80, your approximate measurement will be 34 by 82. Be sure to inform your contractor or the supplier you are buying from that you are giving them a draft. in measurements so that they are not confused with the actual size of the door. It may seem obvious, but prevention is better than cure! If they don't need them, they will say so, but it's nice to have them on hand.

Standard widths

Single door sizes have been largely standardized to ensure a healthy supply and demand market exists. If you go with only one door, you have three options. Individual exterior wood doors come in 30-, 32-, and 36-inch widths. For many people, the choice is aesthetic, but if you want the home to be more spacious or wheelchair-friendly, you'll want to consider width of 32 or 36 inches. Most wheelchairs are between 24 and 27 inches, so technically any door would work, but larger sizes will make entry and exit much more comfortable. The wider entryway will also make it easier for you to move things in and out of the house without hurting your investment.

Standard heights

Unlike the width of exterior wood doors, there are no multiple options for standard heights. All standard exterior wood doors are exactly 80 inches tall. At nearly 7 feet, this height works for most people (especially when you consider that the standard ceiling is 8 feet above the floor), so it hasn't required too many touch-ups. However, if you or someone in your family is especially tall, you may want to consider custom sizes if your ceilings can accommodate them. It will be a bit more expensive, but it beats having to bend down every time you enter your own home and it is not much more work to cut a few inches if you are already installing a new jamb to match the door.

If you can order standard-size exterior wood doors for each entry, you can save a lot of your hard-earned money, so make sure your measurements are correct and you're not ordering sizes you don't need. Once you're armed with the right measurements, finding the right exterior wood doors will be a breeze and your budget will thank you.ESWDA
