Garage Door Sizes: Finding the Best Fit for Your Garage

The first rule of thumb when looking for a garage door is to know the size. Fortunately, many homes are built with standard-sized garage doors. And most prefab door sizes are cut to fit. Do-it-yourself garage door kits are often seven feet tall and eight to nine feet wide for single-car garages. Two-car garage doors are 16 feet wide. Here are some tips for determining how big or small you need a door, or when you should customize it:

Take the necessary steps in the garage

Another important gap is from the top edge of the opening to the headliner. Also known as headroom, this space will house the gate opener and the garage door itself for the drop-down and canopy types. It is more a question of mechanisms and not of the sizes of the garage door. Canopy-type doors would not suit those with tall vehicles well or would need the full vertical clearance of the threshold. Bifold doors may not suit wide vehicles well as you will want to free up horizontal space.

Take note of the other items in your garage 

Shelving and ceiling storage should be considered as they will have to share space with tracks and interior mechanisms.

Take note of the purpose of the garage 

This will help you decide if you need additional features. People who use the garage as a workshop will appreciate the additional natural light that comes in through the windows. A small cut in the door will be helpful if you use the garage door in any way other than to get in or out of the vehicle.

Custom garage doors are the best option if your garage measurements do not match the available precut doors or if you are looking for a particular design that is not available. The first step is to get the correct measurements.
