At night, they let light in and increase your home’s value, but most importantly they provide a barrier between your home and surrounding homes. While replacement windows are a relatively inexpensive project, there are several different types and styles to choose from that can cost hundreds, even thousands of dollars.

Types of Replacement Windows can be described as add ons or replace windows in a frame that is already present. New construction windows are also known as full frame replacement windows. Full frames are comprised of two frames, with the bottom frame holding the sash or knob, while the top frame holds the exterior face of the window. The interior face of the window is supported by a frame from the inside of the home. Typically, replacement windows come in two styles: sash and frame.

Both sash and frame replacement windows came in a wide variety of styles and colors. When purchasing new-construction windows, consider using replacement windows that use the same, low-e glass that is used for sash windows but is pressed into the exterior surface with glue and heat molding. In addition, consider using replacement windows that use low-e coatings that help keep out the ultraviolet rays from the sun, thus minimizing energy costs.

Nail Fin Installation: Many homeowners choose to have their replacement windows installed with the use of a special nose-and-frame fastening method. If you choose this method, be sure to use high quality fasteners, such as double-sided tape and stainless steel screws. If you are having your windows replaced with frames that do not use nose-and-frame fastening, it is likely that the installation will be more difficult. It is recommended that you consult an expert for this installation.

Exterior Finish: Some homeowners prefer to install new construction windows in their homes in order to prevent weather damage or increase curb appeal. However, many homeowners also choose to match the exterior finish of their replacement windows with the siding or exterior of their home. The two most common finishes are wood stained or painted. Wood stained replacement windows have a professional look, while a painted finish provides a more traditional appearance.

Exterior Window Replacement Materials: One way to customize the exterior look of your new home is to use the same type of exterior materials as were used when the home was constructed. For instance, you may select siding and exterior materials that were used on the house when it was constructed. Or, you might choose vinyl siding and other exterior materials that match the exterior finish on the new home. You may also want to consider using the same type of wood for your replacement windows as was used for the house. This is an easy way to achieve a similar appearance to that of your new home.

Retrofit Windows: Even if you already have exterior materials on your home, such as siding and exterior doors and windows, you can still consider retrofit windows if your existing window opening cannot accommodate the new size. Often, this is the best option for existing homes with older windows because these windows are often heavier and require additional hardware to attach them to the exterior walls. Retrofit windows will often require a specific window size. If your existing window does not meet the requirements for retrofit windows, consider a different window style or frame.

Energy efficiency: While many homeowners try to reduce their carbon footprint by replacing their old windows with new construction ones, you should also consider the impact that your new construction window installation may have on your energy consumption. In general, replacement windows do not reduce your need for air conditioning, but some models may come with special features that can affect the amount of cooling needed. The more efficient your new construction window is, the less cooling you will need. Be sure to check your model and compare it to the specifications in your owner’s manual or the Energy Star website to ensure you receive the most efficient and cost effective replacement windows for your home.
